A research project on gender identity, travel and transnationality

Aren Z. Aizura

I am a male-identified transperson who lives in Melbourne, Australia. I finished a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Melbourne in 1999, majoring in Cultural Studies and Creative Writing. After finishing uni, I worked in editing/publishing and on various independent media projects until 2003, when returned to uni and completed Honours in Gender Studies at La Trobe University (Melbourne, Australia).

I began PhD research at the University of Melbourne in 2005. Originally, my thesis research touched on gender variance and travel as part of a larger project about sexuality, gender and informal transnational economies. However, it soon became clear that ‘gender travel’ interested and excited me most.

For fun, I like to read, write, cook, garden, dance and watch far too much television/film. I'm part of a loose collective called Gender Schmender, which puts on occasional trans and queer friendly performance nights, and I'm involved in a Melbourne-based trans support and advocacy group, the Trans Melbourne Gender Project.
